Objective of the Game
In Nessos, players take on the role of heroes from Greek mythology, each striving to be the first to collect 40 victory points. The game revolves around strategic offering and clever deception.
Components
- 60 cards divided into three main categories:
- Vessel Cards: Numbered from 1 to 14 with different "Harmonies"
- Chiron Cards: 5 cards featuring the legendary figure Chiron
- Prison (Krater) Cards: 5 cards representing the dregs of the underworld
Setup
- Shuffle the cards and deal each player 4 face-down cards.
- Place the remaining cards as a draw pile.
- Leave space for the discard pile.
Gameplay
The game proceeds in rounds where players attempt to strategically offer and accept cards to gain points.
- Round Start: The starting player draws a card from the draw pile, so they have 5 cards.
- Offering:
- The active player offers one or more cards to another player.
- They declare the number of cards offered (at least one).
- Vessel Cards must be announced truthfully; however, players can bluff about Chiron and Krater Cards.
- Acceptance or Decline:
- The chosen player can accept or decline the offer.
- If accepted, they reveal the cards and keep the Vessel and Chiron cards, possibly incurring negative points from the Krater.
- If declined, the offering player must reveal and take the cards themselves.
- Point Collection: Players aim to collect harmonious sets of cards to play down and score.
End of the Game
- The game ends when a player reaches 40 points.
- Alternatively, a round ends if a player uncovers all their cards or due to excessive risk, e.g., too many revealed Krater Cards.
Special Rules and Strategies
- Bluffing and Deception: Players must choose when to bluff or speak truthfully. Timing affects trust among players significantly.
- Collect Harmonic Sets: Pay attention early to which sets you are completing to maximize scoring.
- Avoid Krater Cards: Try to pass these to opponents to slow their progress.
Conclusion
Nessos is a dynamic card game combining quick decisions, strategy, and bluffing that is accessible to both newcomers and seasoned players.
