Objective of the Game

Brandeln, also known as Bauernschnapsen, is a card game that is a variant of the well-known game Schnapsen. The objective is to be the first to reach a certain number of points by winning tricks, forming valuable card combinations, and collecting points.

Game Materials

  • A deck of cards with 20 cards consisting of aces, tens, kings, queens, and jacks in four suits.
  • Scoring materials to keep track of points.

Setup

  • Brandeln is typically played with four people, with two players forming a team. The game is played with a deck of 20 cards.

Game Flow

  1. Card Distribution: Each player receives five cards. The remaining cards form a stock (Talon), which is drawn from after each trick.

  2. Trump Announcement: The player to the right of the dealer can decide whether to accept the trump suit of the card shown, or pass. If passed, the next player can choose a trump suit.

  3. Playing Tricks: The player who leads a trick plays one card. The other players must follow suit if possible. If not possible, any card can be played. The player who has the highest trump or the highest card of the led suit wins the trick and leads the next one.

  4. Drawing: After each trick, players draw cards from the stock, starting with the player who won the trick.

Special Features

  • Capturing Tens: If a player captures a trick from the opposing team that contains a ten, the player's team gains additional points.
  • Announcing Rounds: In the first round, players can announce attempts to complete the game with higher point goals (such as “Brandln”), which offers more points but is riskier.
  • Farmer's Schnaps: If a team wins three tricks through Jack Schnapsen or trump leaders, the game round ends immediately.

Scoring

  • Each won game yields a certain number of victory points. These include points for winning tricks and for announced and played combinations.
  • The game is typically played to a predetermined number of points, usually 15 points. The team that reaches this point total first wins the game.

Strategic Tips

  • Card Counting: Players should keep track of the remaining cards in the stock and the cards played to make strategic decisions.
  • Weigh Risks: Announcements and risk decisions should be made carefully.

Brandeln requires both strategic planning and the ability to adapt quickly. It is a game that unveils deeper strategic elements with practice.
