Objective of the Game
Marjapussi is a traditional Finnish card game typically played by four players in fixed partnerships. The main objective of the game is to score a predetermined number of points by strategically playing and collecting certain combinations of tricks.
Game Components
- Deck: A standard deck of 52 playing cards without Jokers is used.
- Number of Players: Exactly 4 players, who play in two teams of two.
- Partnership: Partners sit opposite each other.
Basic Rules
-
Dealing: Each round begins with each player being dealt twelve cards. The remaining undealt cards are set aside, face down, and are not used in the current round.
-
Trump Suit: The trump suit rotates and is determined at the beginning of each round by the first trick.
-
Card Ranking: The ranking of cards in each suit is A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. The ace is the highest card within each suit.
-
Playing a Trick: The player to the dealer's left plays first. The other players follow by playing one card each. Suit following is mandatory: if a player has a card of the led suit, they must play it. If they do not, they may play any card.
-
Winning a Trick: The trick is won by the player who played the highest card in the led suit. The winner of the trick leads the next trick.
Special Strategies
-
Partner Communication: Since direct communication is not allowed, information about card holdings is communicated 'indirectly' through play.
-
Scoring Points: Points are awarded for specific combinations of tricks that are predetermined before the game and checked after each round.
-
Strategic Play: Knowing the trump suit allows for strategic plays that can support a partner or deny opponents valuable tricks.
By using tactical skills and observing the distribution of cards, players can greatly influence the flow of Marjapussi, with an emphasis on partnership and long-term planning.
