Objective of the Game

In A Game of Thrones: The Board Game, players take on the roles of the great Houses of Westeros, vying for control of the realm. The objective is to dominate the most castles and strongholds through strategic influence, military strength, and clever negotiation.

Setup

  • Place the game board in the center of the table. It shows a map of Westeros divided into regions.
  • Each player chooses a House and receives their respective House cards, units, and tokens.
  • Shuffle the Westeros Decks and place them in their designated areas.
  • Position each House's influence tokens on the three influence tracks (Iron Throne, Fiefdoms, King's Court).
  • Deploy the units of each House on their starting locations as per the instruction booklet.

Gameplay

  1. Round Overview
  2. Each round consists of three phases: the Westeros Phase, the Planning Phase, and the Action Phase.

  3. Westeros Phase

  4. Three Westeros cards are drawn, triggering events, political changes, or a Wildling attack.
  5. All players respond by taking actions or bidding influence to maintain control.

  6. Planning Phase

  7. Players secretly plan their moves by placing order tokens face-down on the board.
  8. There are five types of orders: March, Support, Defend, Raid, and Consolidate Power.

  9. Action Phase

  10. Orders are revealed and resolved in a specific order.
  11. Battles are resolved by comparing army strengths and using House cards.
  12. Units can move, attack, or defend, and support can be given from adjacent regions.

Combat

  • Combat is resolved by summing the attacking forces, their supporting units, and the strength of the House card selected.
  • The defender does the same.
  • The higher total wins the battle.

Winning Conditions

  • The player who controls the most castles and strongholds at the end of a round (after 10 rounds or when all noble tokens are placed) wins the game.

Strategic Tips

  • Use Influence Wisely: Influence can be crucial for control of the Iron Throne, the Valyrian Steel Blade, or the Messenger Raven.
  • Negotiations and Alliances: Use diplomacy and temporary alliances to your advantage.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game is a deeply strategic and competitive game that requires tactical thinking and diplomatic skill.
