Objective of the Game

In Axis & Allies, players take on the roles of major powers during World War II: the Allies (United States, Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom) or the Axis Powers (Germany and Japan). The objective is to strategically capture territories, influence global politics, and defeat the opponent by controlling key capitals.

Game Components

  1. A game board depicting a world map with various territories.
  2. Game pieces for each nation representing infantry, tanks, aircraft, ships, and submarines.
  3. Game cards that depict special events or advantages.
  4. Dice used to determine combat outcomes.
  5. Paper money and tokens to represent the economic aspect of the game.
  6. Technology markers and progress indicators.

Setup

  1. Choose a Nation: Each player selects a nation – either one of the Axis powers or one of the Allies.
  2. Initial Setup: Place your nation's units according to the guidelines in the rulebook on the map.
  3. Starting Capital: Gain starting capital in the form of paper money to build units or purchase technology advancements.

Gameplay

The game proceeds in turns in a fixed order reflecting historical developments.

1. Build Phase:

  • Players may purchase new units based on their income. Income is generated by controlling territories.
  • Develop technologies for new abilities or unit bonuses.

2. Combat Movement Phase:

  • Move Units: Shift your units into adjacent enemy territories to initiate a battle.

3. Combat Phase:

  • Roll for Battles: The success of an attack depends on dice results and unit bonuses.
  • Resolve Losses: The loser must remove units equal to the inflicted damage.

4. Non-Combat Movement Phase:

  • Move units within owned or allied territories without engaging in combat.

5. Cleanup Phase:

  • End the round by setting income based on controlled regions and prepare for the next round.

Winning the Game

The game ends when one side captures all the capitals of the other side or a side surrenders. Alternatively, players can stop at a predetermined time and determine the winner by the number and control of territories.

Strategic Considerations

  • Alliances and Cooperation: Allied nations must work strategically together; communication and synergy are critical.
  • Resource Management: Effectively acquire, position, and utilize units. The economy of constant supply lines is vital.
  • Technology Development: Decide when to invest in further development vs. enlarging troop resources.

Tips for Beginners

  • Strike quickly and decisively to establish a power advantage.
  • Plan multiple moves ahead and avoid opening unnecessary fronts.

Axis & Allies is complex and strategically deep, requiring patience and tactical planning to dominate the game.
