Objective
The objective of the game "Mariechen von hinten" is to have the lowest score possible by cleverly managing your cards without seeing them beforehand. Players must tactically swap their cards with others and try to deduce the values of hidden cards.
Number of Players
The game can be played with 3 or more players. For larger groups, it is advisable to use multiple decks of cards to keep the game engaging.
Materials
- One standard 52-card deck is usually sufficient. If there are many players, use two decks.
- Pen and paper to keep track of scores.
Gameplay
-
Setup
- Each player receives three face-down cards, without looking at them. Not knowing what the cards are is part of the challenge.
- The remaining deck is placed face down in the middle of the table as a draw pile. An discard pile will be formed next to it.
-
Turn Sequence
- The player to the left of the dealer starts. Each player has two action options:
- Draw a card from the draw pile and either swap it with one of their face-down cards (place the swapped card face-up on the discard pile) or place the drawn card directly onto the discard pile.
- Take a card from the discard pile and replace it with one of their face-down cards.
- When a player believes they have the lowest sum, they can knock. This triggers the last round for all players.
-
Scoring
- After a player knocks, and each player has made one final turn, all players reveal their cards. Points are calculated as follows:
- Ace: 1 point
- 2 to 10: face value (2–10 points)
- Face cards (Jack, Queen, King): 10 points each
- The player with the lowest total score wins the round.
Strategic Tips
- Swapping Cards: Aim to exchange high cards, especially face cards, if possible.
- Bluffing: Knocking can be used as a bluff to confuse opponents or rush their decisions.
- Observation: Pay attention to the cards opponents discard to deduce their strategy or remaining hidden cards.
"Mariechen von hinten" combines luck with a touch of strategy as players must decide the optimal times to knock and when to swap cards.
