Objective of the Game
Catan: The Duel is a strategic card game for two players. The winner is determined by who first reaches a certain number of victory points by expanding their principality and interacting with various cards.
Game Components
- Cards: There are different types of cards including landscape cards, construction cards, and event cards.
- Dice: Two dice that are used for generating resources and events.
Setup
- Set up the Play Area: Each player starts with a basic principality consisting of a settlement and a road.
- Assemble Decks: Sort the cards by type and place them face down in stacks. These include the supply stack and the three different stacks for road, settlement/city, and building cards.
- Distribute Resources: Each player begins with a selection of resources according to the starting rules.
- Determine Victory Points Goal: Set the goal number of victory points. Generally, this is 7, 12, or 13 for a regular game.
Gameplay
Catan – The Duel consists of alternating turns, each divided into the following phases:
- Event and Production Phase:
- The active player rolls both dice. The event die triggers an event, while the number die determines which landscapes produce resources.
-
If the number die matches a player's landscape number, that player receives the corresponding resources.
-
Building and Trading Phase:
- Players can build roads, settlements, cities, and buildings by spending the required resources and using cards from their hand.
-
Players can trade with the bank supply, usually at a rate of 3:1 or 2 like resources for one desired resource, depending on developments and port expansions.
-
Action Phase:
- During this phase, players can play development cards, which can have various effects on the game, such as additional resources, knights, or building effects.
Key Rules and Strategies
-
Resource Management: A crucial aspect is effectively planning and managing resources. Excess resources can be traded profitably or saved for future moves.
-
Strategy and Adaptation: As each turn brings a new dice roll and thus unpredictable resource outcomes, it's important to be flexible and maintain a stable base of resource-producing landscapes.
-
The Knight: Use the knight wisely to hinder the opponent's expansion. Placing the robber on a frequently rolled opponent's landscape can significantly restrict their resource supply.
Winning Conditions
The game ends immediately when a player reaches the agreed number of victory points.
