Objective of the Game
Catan – Big Game Event Kit brings the classic "Settlers of Catan" into an exciting large-scale scenario where numerous players can participate simultaneously. Each player's goal is to be the first to reach a certain number of victory points by building settlements and cities, establishing trade routes, and utilizing development cards.
Setup
- Set up a large play area with enough space to accommodate multiple standard game sets.
- Each player receives the usual starting resources: wood, brick, wool, grain, and ore.
- The number of players can reach into the hundreds, so several game facilitators are needed to coordinate the proceedings.
Gameplay
-
Starting the Game: As in regular Catan, players roll dice to activate resource tiles. These pay out to any player owning settlements adjacent to the rolled number.
-
Trading: Players may trade with one another, either directly or through mediators.
-
Building: Players can use their resources to build roads, settlements, and cities. They can also purchase development cards.
-
Knight Cards and Robber: Players can use knight cards to move the robber, which can block resource production for others and steal resources.
-
Progress: Players track their progress by victory point cards, the number of settlements and cities, and achieving the largest army or longest road.
Special Features & Strategies
- Resource Scarcity: Depending on the number of players and board size, certain resources may become scarce quickly. Smart trading is key.
- Negotiations: With many players, negotiation is crucial. Trust plays a large role as alliances can be formed and betrayed.
- Coordination: The large number of players can lead to confusion. Clear communication and good planning are essential.
End of the Game
The game ends when a player reaches the agreed-upon victory point total. With many participants, this may differ from the usual 10 victory points in regular Catan.
Conclusion
"Catan – Big Game Event Kit" stretches the classic Catan rules to create an impressive experience for large groups. It requires flexibility, patience, and excellent trading skills to succeed in such a dynamic environment.
