Objective

Friedrich is a strategic board game that simulates the Seven Years' War between Prussia and a coalition of Austria, France, Russia, and Sweden. The primary goal for the Prussian player is to fend off the enemies, while coalition players aim to conquer Prussia.

Components

  • Game Board: Representing the map of Europe with various regions.
  • Playing Pieces: Markers for armies of different nations.
  • Strategic Cards: Representing the power dynamics of different scenes and tactical options.
  • Control Markers: Indicating which nation controls which territories.

Setup

  1. Choosing Nations: Each player selects a nation, with one always playing Prussia. Other players choose from Austria, France, Russia, and Sweden.
  2. Place Armies: Each nation places their armies according to the rule handbook.
  3. Distribute Cards: Each player receives strategic cards.
  4. Set Markers: Place control markers on the board based on the initial setup.

Turn Structure

The game consists of multiple rounds, each divided into specific phases:

1. Planning Phase

  • Each player secretly plans their moves and lays them down secretly. Decisions rely on strategic cards and the current board situation.

2. Movement Phase

  • Players execute their planned movements on the board. Armies can move to adjacent regions to conquer areas, engage in combat, or regroup.

3. Battle Phase

  • Resolve battles if armies from different nations occupy the same region. Use strategic cards to influence battle events.
  • The aim is to outmaneuver or weaken opponents to gain territories.

4. Supply Phase

  • Check unit supplies. Armies that cannot be supplied suffer losses. Supply plays a critical role in maintaining forces.

Special Features and Strategy

  • Prussia must be played very skillfully since it is attacked by multiple enemies simultaneously.
  • Utilizing geographic advantages and strengths of own troops is crucial.
  • Coalition players must work together in a coordinated and strategic manner to overwhelm Prussia.

End of Game

The game ends either when Prussia repels all opponents and achieves certain victory points, or when the coalition captures Prussian capital Berlin.

Friedrich requires both tactical skill and the ability to anticipate opponents' intentions. Careful planning and conscious risk assessment are necessary for success.
