Objective

Senet is an ancient Egyptian game played on a rectangular board consisting of 30 squares arranged in three rows of ten. The goal is to navigate all your pieces through the board and off the end before your opponent can do the same with theirs.

Components

  • A board with 30 squares arranged in three rows of ten.
  • Two sets of seven playing pieces, usually in two different colors.
  • Four throwing sticks or dice.

Setup

  1. Each player chooses a set of seven playing pieces of one color.
  2. Players alternatively place their pieces on the first 14 spaces. There is usually no fixed starting order, and traditionally the game starts with an empty board.

Gameplay

  1. Rolling: Instead of using dice, players throw small wooden sticks or sometimes dice. Depending on how many flat sides of the sticks are facing up, the number of steps is determined:
  2. 1 flat side up = 1 step
  3. 2 flat sides up = 2 steps
  4. 3 flat sides up = 3 steps
  5. 4 flat sides up = 4 steps
  6. No flat side up = 5 steps
  7. Move: The player moves one of their pieces forward by the number of steps rolled.
  8. Landing on an occupied space: If the landing space is occupied by an opponent's piece, the opponent's piece is bumped back to the originally occupied space of the moving piece. A player's own pieces cannot occupy the same space simultaneously.
  9. Special Squares: Certain squares are considered protective or have special rules, for instance:
  10. House of Rebirth (Square 15): Pieces on this square cannot be knocked back.
  11. House of Happiness (Square 27): A piece here may need to be removed and placed back at one of the initial squares.
  12. Strategy: It's common to keep pieces together to control a larger part of the board and block the opponent’s progression.

Winning the Game

The game ends when a player successfully moves all their pieces off the board. This player is declared the winner.

Strategies and Tips

  • Blocking: It is strategic to block your opponent’s pieces while safeguarding your route to the board’s end.
  • Risk vs. Reward: Sometimes it’s beneficial to risk a piece to knock back an opponent’s piece or secure your path forward.

The combination of chance and strategy makes Senet a fascinating game that continues to captivate players with its blend of tactics and chance management.
