Objective of the Game:
Taboo is a communication game where players try to get their teammates to guess a particular word without using certain forbidden words (taboo words). Teams score points by guessing as many words as possible within a set time limit.
Game Setup:
- Form Teams: Players divide into two teams.
- Card Deck: Shuffle the Taboo cards and place them ready for play. Each card has a main target word and a list of 4-5 taboo words.
- Gather Materials: Ensure there is a timer (or a smartphone with a timer) and a buzzer (like a bell or a buzzer).
Gameplay:
- Player Selection: One player from a team becomes the clue-giver; this player draws the top card from the deck.
- Start Time: A player from the opposing team starts the clock (usually 60 seconds).
- Description: The clue-giver attempts to get their team to guess the target word without using any of the taboo words or any parts of the target word. The clue-giver can't point to the card, use initials, or gestures.
- Monitoring: A player from the opposing team monitors the clue-giver. If a taboo word is used, they buzz, and the card is removed from the game.
- Guessing: If the team guesses the word correctly, the clue-giver sets the card aside and draws another card. Each correctly guessed word earns the team one point.
- Mistakes: If a taboo word is used or rules are broken, the round ends without a point for that card.
- End of Round: When time runs out, the round ends, and points are tallied.
Special Rules:
- Teams take turns playing rounds.
- The game ends when each player has had a turn as clue-giver or a predetermined number of rounds have been played.
- The team with the most points wins.
Strategies:
- Creativity: Be creative and describe the target word with unusual associations.
- Speed: Try to be fast, but don't risk using taboo words.
- Memory and Teamplay: Develop private hints that your team easily understands without making it obvious to the opponents.
Taboo is thus a fast-paced and fun game that enhances communication skills and teamwork.
