Objective of the Game
Pentelitha is a strategic board game aiming to align a row of five stones on a square board. The line can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
Number of Players
The game is played with two players, thus it is a two-person board game.
Setup
- The board consists of an 8x8 grid.
- Each player chooses a color: black or white.
- Both players have a supply of 32 stones in their respective color.
Rules
- Starting the Game: Black begins the game.
- Turns: Players alternatively place one stone of their color on any empty cell of the grid.
- Objective: The first player to form an uninterrupted straight line of exactly five of their own stones wins. This line can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
- No Overstepping: A line only counts if it contains exactly five stones. More than five consecutive stones do not lead to victory.
Strategy Tips
- Center-Oriented Play: Placing pieces near the center of the board provides more flexibility to develop lines in multiple directions.
- Blocking: Be vigilant in disrupting your opponent's attempts to place four consecutive stones early by placing blocking stones.
- Double Threats: Aim to create situations where you can potentially complete two lines simultaneously to put pressure on your opponent.
Special Situations
- Draw: If the board is completely filled and neither player has formed a line of five stones, the game ends in a draw.
Pentelitha requires foresight and the ability to tactically block the opponent to be the first to complete the necessary line of five. It is a classic example of a game that is easy to learn but difficult to master.
