Objective of the Game

The goal of Junqi is to capture the opponent's flag while defending your own. Players strategically use their various officers and soldiers to achieve this.

Game Components

  • A square game board consisting of 121 squares (11x11 grid).
  • Each player has an army of 25 pieces, including officers, soldiers, bombs, and a flag, which vary in rank.
  • Initially, pieces are hidden from the opponent.

Setup

  1. Placing the pieces: Players secretly arrange their pieces within the 5x5 squares at their respective sides of the board. There are special railway lines for strategic movement and special spots for camps and headquarters.

  2. Number of Players: "Junqi" is typically played by two players.

Rules

  • Movement: Players take turns moving one piece per turn, moving one square vertically, horizontally, or using railway lines for unblocked, straight paths.

  • Combat: If a piece moves into a square occupied by an opponent's piece, a battle ensues. Each piece has a rank; higher-ranking pieces defeat lower-ranking ones. Exceptions:

  • Spies defeat generals in a surprise attack.
  • Bombs destroy any piece except for the mine-clearers.

  • Special Squares:

  • Camps: Provide refuge as they cannot be attacked.
  • Headquarters: Capturing the flag here wins the game.

  • Strategic Moves: Use railways and camps for advantageous positions. Avoid exposing your flag.

Strategy

  1. Maintain Caution: Keep your higher-ranked pieces hidden while deceiving your opponent with their placement.

  2. Balance Offense and Defense: Push towards the enemy flag while maintaining defense for yours.

  3. Exploit the Railroads: They allow rapid movement, enabling surprising attacks.

Junqi involves strategic thinking and the ability to bluff your opponent. Decide wisely and adapt your strategy as the game unfolds to secure a win!
