Objective
The objective of Tantrix is to create the longest continuous chain of a specific color by strategically placing hexagonal tiles. Alternatively, depending on the game version, the goal might be to complete closed loops.
Components
- A set of 56 hexagonal tiles with colored lines of different patterns drawn across their surface.
- A play area, which can be a table surface where tiles are placed.
- Tile racks or holders can be used for convenience.
Setup
- Shuffle the Tiles: Mix all tiles face down in the middle of the table.
- Determine Player Count: Tantrix can be played with 2-4 players.
- Draw Starting Hands: Each player draws six tiles to form their hand.
- Some tiles remain face down in the middle as a draw pile, which forms the basis for starting moves.
Game Play
- First Move: One player starts by placing any tile from their hand face up, aligning it with existing tiles to match lines.
- Placing Tiles: Players take turns placing a tile from their hand to extend their color line or loop.
- Connection Rules: Each placed tile must connect at least one matching line with adjacent tiles.
- Draw Up: After playing a tile, players draw a new one from the pile to maintain a hand of six tiles.
- End of Game: The game ends when all tiles are played or no further legal moves are possible.
Rules and Special Features
- Matching Lines: Lines of the same color must connect when adjacent.
- Constraints: If a tile position has three sides matched by existing tiles, that location becomes locked.
- Completing Loops: A loop is complete when it forms a continuous, enclosed circle without open ends.
Strategy
- Forward Thinking: Plan your tile placements to set up future moves and avoid blocking yourself unnecessarily.
- Blocking: Play tiles to restrict your opponent’s options.
- Flexibility: Place your tiles to allow multiple ways of extension or closure.
Tantrix is a game that combines strategic planning with reactive play, testing both long-term strategies and adaptability throughout the game.
