Objective
The objective of Astragaloi, also known as Knucklebones, is to score the highest points by skillfully catching thrown knucklebones. This ancient game was originally played with the knucklebones of sheep or goats, but today it is often played with specially-made stones or small dice.
Setup
You will need: - A flat playing surface - Five stones or small dice per player to represent the knucklebones
Gameplay
-
Selecting the Starting Player: Each player tosses all five knucklebones simultaneously. The player with the highest score starts the game.
-
Round: The starting player throws all five knucklebones into the air and tries to catch them on the back of their hand.
- If successful, they score based on the values caught.
-
If any are missed, the turn ends without additional points and the next player goes.
-
Value of Knucklebones:
-
Four knucklebones have values similar to dice (1 to 4). The fifth knucklebone is the King and is always worth five points.
-
Scoring: At the end of each round, add the values of the caught knucklebones to the player’s score.
-
Winning the Game: Play continues until a player reaches a predetermined score (e.g., 100 points). Alternatively, a set number of rounds can be played, with the highest scorer winning.
Strategic Tips
- Focus on catching the King, as it holds the highest value.
- Practice balance and dexterity to catch more knucklebones simultaneously and maximize your score.
Variants
- Tournament Mode: Play multiple rounds and sum up the scores to determine the best overall player.
- Number Game: Certain number combinations, such as a Full House (three of one kind and two of another), score bonus points.
Astragaloi is a game that requires skill with a touch of luck. Its simplicity and minimal material requirement make it ideal for impromptu games both indoors and outdoors.
