Objective of the Game
The goal of Mouche is to be the last player with at least one point remaining. Players lose points if they get caught lying or fail to outbid another player's roll.
Game Materials
- Each player needs the same number of dice, usually five.
- A dice cup for each player.
- Paper and pencil for keeping score.
Game Play
- Starting the Game: Each player has a dice cup and five dice. All players roll their dice secretly into their cups so that no one can see the other's dice.
- Making Claims: The starting player makes a claim about the value or quantity of the dice (for example "three fives" or "four sixes"). This claim is about the total number of dice under all cups.
- Outbidding Claims: The next player can decide to believe the previous player's claim or not. If the player decides to outbid, they must either declare a higher number of the current value (e.g., from "three fives" to "four fives") or a higher face number with the same or a larger quantity (e.g., from "three fives" to "three sixes").
- Calling Bluff: Instead of outbidding, a player may announce that they do not believe the previous player's claim. In this case, all cups reveal their dice:
- If the claim is correct, the doubter loses one point.
- If the claim is incorrect, the player who made the false claim loses a point.
- Ending the Round: After a reveal, a new round starts with the next player as the starting player.
Special Rules and Strategies
- Bluff and Intuition are Key: Players must devise a strategy based on the claims made and their own roll. Crafty bluffing can often lead to success, but there's a risk of getting caught.
- Create Deliberate Uncertainty: Players can manipulate others using body language and calculated doubts.
- The 1's Wildcard: In certain variations, ones act as wildcards and count as any chosen face number, allowing for strategic recalculations.
End of the Game
The game ends when only one player has at least one point left. This player is declared the winner.
Conclusion
Mouche is an exciting blend of bluffing and strategic gameplay with simple dice mechanics. Players should carefully plan their claims and perhaps engage in some acting to secure victory.
