Objective of the Game

The objective of Neoclassical Chess is to checkmate your opponent's king. Checkmate means putting the king in a position where it is under attack and has no legal moves to escape the attack.

Setup

Neoclassical Chess is played on a standard chessboard comprising an 8x8 grid. Each player starts with a set of 16 pieces: 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 1 queen, and 1 king.

The pieces are set up as follows: - The second row (or rank) consists of pawns. - In the first row, from left to right, are placed rook, knight, bishop, queen, king, bishop, knight, and rook. - The queen stands on a square of its own color (white queen on white square, black queen on black square).

Gameplay

  • White starts: The player with the white pieces makes the first move.
  • Turns: Players then alternate turns, each making one move at a time.
  • Movement Options:
  • Pawns: Move forward one square, but they can move two squares forward from their starting position. They capture one square diagonally forward.
  • Rook: Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
  • Knight: Moves in an L-shape: either two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicular or one square in one direction and then two squares perpendicular.
  • Bishop: Moves diagonally any number of squares.
  • Queen: Moves any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
  • King: Moves one square in any direction.
  • Special Moves:
    • Castling: A combined move of the king and a rook of the same color.
    • En passant: A pawn that moves two squares from its starting position and lands beside an opponent's pawn can be captured en passant on the following move.

Key Rules

  • Check: When a player's king is under threat, it is called check. The player must remove the check.
  • Checkmate: If a king is in check and cannot make any legal move to escape, it is checkmate, and the attacking player wins the game.
  • Stalemate: A player whose king is not in check but has no legal move to make results in a stalemate, leading to a draw.

Strategy

Neoclassical Chess requires strategic planning, tactical maneuvers, and careful consideration of moves. It is essential to control the center of the board, actively develop pieces, and protect your king while pressuring the opponent's king.
