Objective of the Game

Warhammer Age of Sigmar is a tabletop miniature game where players strategically deploy their armies to engage in epic battles against each other. The objective is typically to defeat the opponent by achieving mission objectives or eliminating the opposing forces.

Game Components

  • Miniatures: Each player owns a custom-built army of miniatures belonging to various factions in the game.
  • Game Board: A playing field, usually rich in terrain, on which the battles are fought.
  • Rulebook: Contains the game's core rules and specific rules for each faction.
  • Warscrolls: Describe the abilities and characteristics of each unit.
  • Dice and Measuring Tape: Dice are used for determining hit and damage rolls, while a tape measure is used for movement and positioning the miniatures.

Setup

  1. Army Composition: Each player builds an army according to agreed point limits, which restrict the size of the armies.
  2. Board Setup: Players agree on the size of the battlefield and place terrain to create strategic obstacles.
  3. Mission Selection: Determine the scenario or mission to be played. These often set out special rules or victory conditions.

Gameplay

1. Turn Sequence

The game is played in alternating turns, where each player, in turn, performs all phases in their turn:

Hero Phase

  • Casting Spells: Some units can cast spells to provide certain advantages or hinder opponents.
  • Issuing Commands: Hero units can issue special command abilities that confer strategic benefits.

Movement Phase

  • Activate and Move Units: Players move their units across the battlefield, typically requiring measurement to determine distances.

Shooting Phase

  • Ranged Attacks: Units make attacks with ranged weapons against enemy units within range.

Charge Phase

  • Engage in Melee: Determine which units can make a short assault to engage in close combat.

Combat Phase

  • Melee Attacks: Conduct melee attacks between opposing units in contact.

Battleshock Phase

  • Moral Tests: Check if units are demoralized and suffer additional losses.

2. Victory Condition

The game often ends when certain objectives are achieved or an army is decisively weakened. The victory conditions are often scenario-dependent.

Strategic Considerations

  • Army Composition: Choosing the army and its composition are crucial to balancing strengths and weaknesses optimally.
  • Terrain Utilization: Features such as forests or ruins provide strategic advantages or obstacles that can be used wisely.
  • Resource Management: The use of hero abilities and timing spells are essential.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar is a deep strategic and tactical game requiring both preplanning and situational adjustments during the battle.
