Objective:
Malmsturm is a pen-and-paper role-playing game distinctly set in a fantasy world inspired by Nordic myths. The goal for players is to guide their characters through stories and scenarios, presented by the Game Master (GM), using clever role-playing and strategic decisions.
Basics:
Malmsturm utilizes the Fate Core System, a narrative-driven and flexible set of rules focused on collaborative storytelling. Players create their characters, which are described using a blend of numeric values known as "Aspects," "Skills," and "Stunts."
Aspects:
Aspects are descriptive phrases or adjectives that highlight the most crucial attributes of a character or situation, encompassing both positive and negative elements pertinent to gameplay, such as "One-Armed Swordmaster."
Skills and Stunts:
Skills are numerical values indicating a character’s proficiency in specific areas. Stunts are special maneuvers or abilities that provide advantages in certain situations.
A Turn:
A typical turn in Malmsturm revolves around a challenge posed by the GM. Players employ their Skills, Aspects, and Stunts to overcome these challenges. Decision outcomes often involve Fate Dice (six-sided dice marked with +, –, and blank sides) to simulate uncertainty and risk.
The Game Master:
The Game Master’s role involves describing the world of Malmsturm, structuring the narrative, and controlling Non-Player Characters (NPCs). They make final rule decisions and adapt the storyline based on player choices.
Strategy and Gameplay:
During gameplay, players should understand that leveraging Aspects is not solely for forcing advantageous outcomes but also for enriching the story. This can involve a bidding system using Fate Points, which players earn or spend by creatively integrating predetermined aspects into the story.
By combining strategic planning, role-playing, and the skilled use of Aspects, Skills, and Stunts, players collaboratively explore exciting adventures and narratives within Malmsturm’s myth-influenced world.
