Objective of the Game
Wendischer Schafkopf is a traditional card game mainly played in the Sorbian region of Lusatia. The objective of the game is to collect the most points by winning tricks with your team.
Game Materials
It is played with a French deck of cards consisting of 32 cards (only the cards from 7 to Ace). Depending on the region, a German deck might also be used.
Number of Players
The game is usually played with four players.
Setup
- The cards are shuffled and distributed so each player receives eight cards.
- One player is designated as the dealer, often alternating each round.
Game Flow
-
Determining Partnerships: Wendischer Schafkopf typically features rotating partnerships. Partnerships are determined through a bidding process where one of the players declares the trump suit.
-
Bidding: The player to the left of the dealer starts the bidding. This decides who will declare the trump suit and announce the game.
-
Game Declaration: The winner of the bidding announces the trump suit and may select a partner.
-
Trick-Playing:
- The player to the dealer's left plays the first card.
- In clockwise order, each player must play a card.
- Follow Suit Rule: Players must play a card of the same suit as led if possible. If not, they must play a trump card or any other card if no trump is available.
-
The highest trump or the highest card of the suit led wins the trick, and the winner collects the cards and leads the next card.
-
Scoring:
- Points from the taken tricks are totaled. Each card has a specific point value: Ace (11), 10 (10), King (4), Queen (3), Jack (2).
- The team with the most points wins the round.
Strategic Tips
- Card Counting: Keep track of what cards have been played to make strategic decisions.
- Use of Trump Cards: Handle trump cards wisely to win important tricks or block opponents.
- Team Coordination: Pay attention to working with your partner to maximize the score.
Wendischer Schafkopf is a strategic game that requires skill and teamwork, making it an exciting choice for game nights.
