Objective
Adventure Games are narrative cooperative games where players work together to experience a story and solve puzzles. The goal is to collaboratively progress through the narrative, combine objects, and make decisions that impact the course of the story.
Components
- Game Cards: Represent locations, items, events, and characters in the game.
- Adventure Book: Contains the story that unfolds as the game progresses. It is read aloud by the players as decisions are made.
- Player Figures: Represent the players' characters, which can be moved around a board or locations.
- Game Board (optional): Displays the locations that can be explored in the game.
Setup
- Choose who will read from the adventure book and record the decisions.
- Prepare all cards by category without looking at them.
- Each player takes a player figure.
- Start with the first chapter in the adventure book.
Gameplay
-
Reading and Decision-Making: The reader narrates the current section of the adventure book. Players discuss and agree on a decision if multiple options are presented.
-
Exploring: Players can explore locations by moving their figures and flipping cards that describe the locations or items in more detail.
-
Combining: Upon finding items, players can attempt to combine them to discover new options or clues. Combinations are checked in the book by providing combination codes.
-
Progressing the Story: Depending on the players' decisions, the story branches out in different directions. New areas are explored and new puzzles emerge.
-
Solving Puzzles: Players work together to solve puzzles needed to advance the storyline.
Features
- Cooperation: It's essential to combine players' abilities and ideas; open communication is key.
- Long-term Impact: Decisions can have long-term effects, only becoming apparent later in the game.
- Replay Value: The game can be played multiple times to experience different endings due to its branching nature.
Ending
The game concludes when the story is completed, achieved by playing through all chapters. The team wins together, with the quality of the ending depending on how successful the puzzles were solved and challenges met. Some endings may be more successful than others based on the outcomes of the players' decisions.
