Objective of the Game

In "The Lord of the Rings", each player takes on the role of a hobbit from J.R.R. Tolkien's original story. The game's objective is to safely bring the One Ring to Mount Doom and destroy it before Sauron's power reaches the hobbits. This game is cooperative, meaning all players work together to win the game.

Setup

1. Board Setup: Lay out the main game board and place Sauron on the 12th position of the Sauron track.
2. Choose Hobbits: Each player selects a hobbit figure and places it on the starting position in the Shire.
3. Distribute Cards: Shuffle the event and fellowship decks. Each player receives a specific number of hand cards according to the rules.
4. Set Tokens: Place various tokens like life points available to all players.

Gameplay

Round Structure

The game progresses through several scenarios, played alternately as Event and Adventure phases. Each scenario represents a location from the story (e.g., Moria, Helms Deep) and imposes particular challenges and dangers on the players.

1. Event Phase: An event card is drawn, and its content is read aloud. These describe dangers that must be immediately dealt with or ignored, according to the rules.
2. Action: Players may choose to use one or more of their fellowship cards or skip certain actions.
3. Move: Use the special symbols on your cards to travel along the scenario track and meet the scenario's requirements.
4. Manage Risks: Overcome emerging obstacles by fulfilling specific demands (like collecting symbols or defeating enemies).

Adventure Phase

• Use of the Ring: The player with the ring-bearer staff is responsible for managing the powers of the ring and decides whether to use the ring to bypass threats.
• Sauron's Movement: If players fail to meet certain conditions, Sauron moves closer to the hobbits, increasing the danger level.

Winning and Losing Conditions

• Victory: Players win by successfully destroying the ring at Mount Doom.
• Defeat: Players lose if Sauron gets the ring, or all hobbits fall.
