Objective of the Game

Tatteln is a strategic card game where players aim to gather the highest number of points by strategically playing and exchanging cards. Each player tries to achieve the best combination of cards to score the most points by the end of the game.

Game Materials

• A deck of playing cards (this can be a standard German or French deck)
• Pencil and paper for score keeping

Setup

1. Number of Players: The game can be played by 2 to 6 players.
2. Thoroughly shuffle the deck and deal five cards to each player.
3. Place the remaining deck in the center of the table as the draw deck.

Game Play

1. Start of a Round

• The player to the left of the dealer begins, and the play continues clockwise.

2. Draw a Card

• At the start of a turn, a player draws a card either from the draw deck or the top card on the discard pile.

3. Playing/Swapping Cards

• Players try to improve their hand by playing various card actions (laying down, swapping up to three cards with the draw pile).
• Combinations: The aim is to form card combinations like pairs, triplets, or a sequence (if using a German deck).
• Value: Different combinations have different point values, which are recorded on the score sheet.

4. Discard a Card

• At the end of their turn, players must place a card face-up on the discard pile.

5. End of a Round

• A round ends when a player lays all their cards in valid combinations and has no cards left in hand. Occasionally, the round can end if the draw pile is exhausted.

Scoring

• Points for each round are recorded.
• The game ends after a predetermined number of rounds or when a player reaches a set point threshold.
• The player with the most points wins.

Strategies

• Card Awareness: Try to remember which cards have been played to better guess what might still be in the draw.
• Risk Assessment: Decide whether to aim for risky combinations or play safe with smaller, secure points across the rounds.

End of Game

• The game concludes when all rounds are played or when a player reaches a predetermined point total.
