Objective of the Game

Godori is a traditional Korean card game played with a Hwatu deck, consisting of 48 cards divided into 12 monthly sets with 4 cards each. The objective of the game is to score points by collecting specific combinations of cards. The winner is the first player to reach a predetermined score.

Setup

  1. Card Deck: Ensure all 48 cards of a Hwatu deck are present.
  2. Number of Players: Godori is typically played with 2-4 players.
  3. Shuffle the Cards: Thoroughly shuffle all the cards.
  4. Deal the Cards: Each player is dealt 7 cards, with the remaining cards placed face down in the center.
  5. Reveal Cards: Place 6 cards face up in the center.

Gameplay

  1. Starting the Game: The player to the left of the dealer starts the game.
  2. Turn Order: During a turn, a player performs the following steps:
  3. Play a Card: Choose a card from your hand and place it in the center to pair with a face-up card. If paired, you take both cards and set them aside.
  4. Draw a Card: Draw one card from the deck and place it in the center. If it can be paired with a face-up card, take both cards.
  5. Continue: The game continues clockwise.
  6. Special Rule of 'Godori': If certain combinations are achieved (e.g., collecting the three "Godori" cards of months 2, 4, and 8), players gain extra points.

Scoring

  • Light Cards (Kwang): Certain cards have special symbols worth more points. Collecting two or more earns points.
  • Animal Cards: Can be collected and scored in pairs.
  • Plant Cards: Provide minor points and can be combined for points.
  • Ribbon Cards: Specific ribbons among the cards offer additional points.

Strategic Tips

  • Pay attention to which combinations you aim for, as some score higher than others.
  • Try to anticipate which cards your opponents need and prevent them from collecting these.
  • Manage your hand cards wisely to maximize your chances of pairing cards.

Winning the Game

The game ends when a player reaches the established score. Alternatively, the game can be played until no more cards can be taken, with the player having the most points declared the winner.
