Objective of the Game
The objective of Midnight Party is for players to avoid being caught by the ghost "Hugo" with their pieces. When Hugo emerges from his hiding place, players must quickly move their pieces to safe rooms to avoid incurring penalty points.
Setup
- Lay out the board: Place the game board in the middle of the table.
- Distribute pieces: Each player receives game pieces in their own color (usually four pieces). These are placed on the starting field.
- Position the ghost figure: The ghost figure "Hugo" is placed on its designated starting space.
- Prepare the dice: Ensure a die is available.
Gameplay
- Start: All players initially place their game pieces on the starting field.
- Player's turn: Players take turns rolling the die (one roll per turn) and moving their piece clockwise according to the number rolled.
- Hugo awakens: If a player rolls a "six," "Hugo" also moves one step in the movement direction.
- Escape to rooms: The circuit leads past different rooms that offer safety from Hugo. If a player is on or near a room field, they can decide to move their piece into the room on their next turn instead of using the full movement distance.
- Caught by the ghost: If "Hugo" lands on a space with a player's piece, that piece is immediately caught and placed in the dungeon. Caught pieces accumulate penalty points.
- End of the game: The game ends after three rounds have been played by all players or when all pieces are off the board. Penalty points are tallied; the lowest score is the best.
Special Rules and Strategies
- Risk-taking: Sometimes, it may be advantageous not to enter a room immediately, to run longer and improve positioning.
- Room decisions: Once inside a room, pieces are safe from being caught by Hugo. The decision to enter a room should be carefully considered.
- Move optimization: Players should plan their steps to quickly reach rooms or evade Hugo for as long as possible.
