Objective of the Game:
The objective of Intrigue is to accumulate the most money by the end of the game. Players act as members of nobility trying to place their family members in lucrative positions while making life difficult for each other.
Game Components:
- Game Board: Contains various job positions where players can place their family members.
- Player Pieces: Each color represents a player's family members.
- Money: Cash is required to pay for bribes and salaries.
Setup:
- Each player receives a set of game pieces (family members) in their color and a fixed starting amount of money.
- The game board is placed in the center, with job positions available for families.
- Players decide which family begins in the initial play.
How to Play:
- Sending Representatives: At the beginning of each turn, players may try to place their representatives in open job positions of other players.
- Each player takes turns selecting a position on another player's board and offers to place their representative there.
-
Players can negotiate and offer bribes to persuade the other player to allocate the spot.
-
Bribes and Negotiations:
- Money flows between players to promote representatives to better job positions or deny them.
-
Placements are not guaranteed and depend on negotiations.
-
Generating Income: Successfully placed family members bring regular income for their owner, paid in the game's currency.
-
Return of Representatives: At the end of each round, representatives return and new placement opportunities arise.
End of the Game
The game ends after a predetermined number of rounds or when a specific condition is agreed upon is met. The winner is the player with the most money.
Strategy Tips
- Negotiate Well: Skilled diplomacy and keeping or breaking promises can determine whether a spot is allocated.
- Balance Negotiation and Bribery: Too many bribes lead to lack of funds, so weigh gains against expenses.
- Know Your Opponents: Try to understand your opponents' motivations to negotiate better. Some players negotiate better than others and require different approaches.
Intrigue is a negotiation game, thriving on the players' ability to persuade their competitors while making life difficult for fellow players.
