Objective of the Game

The objective of Solitaire is to move all cards into four foundation piles, sorted by suit in ascending order from Ace to King.

Game Components

  • A standard 52-card deck without jokers

Setup

  1. The cards are dealt into seven piles, called tableau piles. The first pile has one card, the second has two cards, and so on up to the seventh pile, which has seven cards.
  2. Only the top card of each tableau pile is turned face-up.
  3. The remaining cards form the draw pile (Stock).

Basic Rules

  • Cards on tableau piles can be arranged in descending order and must alternate in color (red/black). For instance, a red Jack can be placed on a black Queen.
  • You can move a single card or a sequence of cards from one pile to another.
  • Empty tableau piles can only be filled with a King (or a pile starting with a King).
  • Cards can be moved to the foundation piles if they follow suit and order, beginning with the Aces.
  • Cards from the draw pile can be cycled through to enable moves. Depending on the version, you turn over either one or three cards at a time.

Special Features

  • Undo Moves: Some variants allow you to undo a certain number of moves, helping you resolve blockages or adjust strategies.
  • Timed Play: Adding a timer can increase the difficulty and pressure of the game.

Strategies

  • Aim to free up tableau piles to create more spaces for rearranging.
  • Prioritize moving cards to the foundation piles, especially when Aces appear early in the game.
  • Keep an eye on the draw pile and think ahead about potential moves.

Winning the Game

You win Solitaire when all cards are sorted into the foundation piles. The game is lost if no more moves are possible or if the draw pile cards can no longer be cycled.
