Objective of the Game
Scotland Yard is an exciting detective game where one player takes on the role of Mister X, while the other players are detectives trying to catch him. The goal for Mister X is to evade the detectives for as long as possible, while the detectives aim to apprehend him.
Game Components
- 1 Game board displaying the map of London
- 1 Mr. X cap and screen
- 1 Logbook for Mr. X
- 5 Detective markers
- 1 Mister X marker
- 18 Black tickets
- 4 Double move tickets
- A set of transportation tickets (Taxi, Bus, Underground)
Setup
- Place the game board in the center of the table.
- Mister X and the detectives choose starting positions indicated by numbers on the game board. Mister X secretly notes his position in the logbook, while detectives place their pieces visibly on the board.
- Each detective receives a set number of taxi, bus, and underground tickets.
- Mister X receives black tickets, usable for any transport, and double move tickets to make two moves in a row.
Gameplay
The game is played in rounds, consisting of one move by Mister X followed by moves from all detectives.
Mister X's Turn:
- Mister X records his moves only in the logbook and does not reveal his exact position on the board.
- Every few rounds, Mister X must reveal his position, giving detectives a chance to verify his location.
- Mister X plays one ticket per round to indicate the means of transport used.
Detectives' Turn:
- Each detective can move one space using a ticket.
- They can only move where there is a direct connection from their current location.
Key Strategies and Features
- Communication: Detectives must coordinate their movements and share information to deduce Mister X’s position.
- Tickets Usage: The type of ticket Mister X uses can provide clues. For example, using an underground ticket indicates that Mister X moved between widely spaced locations.
- Black Tickets: These allow Mr. X to travel unnoticed. Strategic use of these tickets can thoroughly confuse the detectives.
- Double Move Tickets: Allow for quick escape over long distances in short time frames.
Winning the Game
- Detectives win by landing on the same spot as Mister X or blocking his movement possibilities.
- Mister X wins if he can evade capture for a set number of rounds or when detectives run out of tickets to continue moving.
