The Quest for El Dorado

Objective of the Game

In the board game "The Quest for El Dorado," players compete against each other to be the first to reach the fabled city of gold, El Dorado. Players take on the roles of expedition leaders guiding their teams through the dangerous jungle.

Game Components

  • Game board: Modular setup with various terrain hex tiles (jungle, river, desert, mountains, etc.).
  • Player figures: One for each player to mark their position on the board.
  • Cards: Comprising expedition cards (equipment, travelers, etc.) and marketplace cards.
  • Marketplace: Display of cards that can be purchased during the game.

Setup

  1. Build the modular board: Depending on the scenario, specific board pieces are used to create a variable course.
  2. Provide starting gear: Each player receives a starting deck made of swim, walk, money, and blockage cards.
  3. Set up the marketplace: Prepare cards for the marketplace as per the instructions.
  4. Position starting figures: All players start on the same field at the beginning of the course.

Gameplay

  1. Turn Structure:
  2. The active player performs their turn in the following sequence: Play cards, Travel, Buy cards, and End turn.
  3. If no cards are played, the player's turn ends.

  4. Playing Cards:

  5. Use travel cards to move through different terrain fields. The card's value must meet or exceed the field's requirements.
  6. Use money cards to purchase new cards from the marketplace.

  7. Traveling:

  8. Move over adjacent fields. The cost in card value must match the terrain symbols.
  9. Blockades can be overcome or opened with higher value cards.
  10. Players cannot pass another player's figure or blockade.

  11. Buying Cards:

  12. New cards can be bought from the marketplace for the required money value.
  13. Cards go to the personal discard pile to be used in following rounds.

  14. End Turn:

  15. At the end of the turn, the player draws back up to their hand limit (4 cards).
  16. If the draw pile runs out, shuffle the discard pile to form a new draw pile.

Winning the Game

  • The player who first reaches the El Dorado field wins the game.

Strategic Tips

  • Deck Optimization: Make sure to enhance your deck efficiently by purchasing from the marketplace.
  • Forward Planning: Plan not only the current turn but also the upcoming moves for quick advancement.
  • Block and Route Planning: Use blockades not just as obstacles but potentially as strategic tools against opponents.

The game "The Quest for El Dorado" combines strategy, deck-building, and racing and belongs to adaptable, variable games due to the modular board that always offers new challenges.
