Objective of the Game

Koalitionsschach (Coalition Chess) is a board game similar to traditional chess but with a political component. The objective of the game is to overthrow the opposing "government" (akin to the chess king) by forming coalitions with neutral pieces and strategically checkmating the opponent’s pieces.

Setup

The playing field is a standard 8x8 chessboard. In addition to the classic chess pieces, there are neutral pieces referred to as "politicians," which are placed in the center of the board.

Rules

  1. Game Setup: Each player starts with the classic chess pieces - King, Queen, Rooks, Knights, Bishops, and Pawns. The neutral pieces are placed in the center of the board.
  2. Moves: The pieces move as in classic chess:
    1. Pawn: Moves one square forward, two squares at start. Captures diagonally.
    2. Rook: Moves vertically and horizontally any number of squares.
    3. Knight: Moves in an L-shape, two squares in one direction, one square perpendicular.
    4. Bishop: Moves diagonally any number of squares.
    5. Queen: Combines the Rook's and Bishop's moves.
    6. King: Moves one square in any direction.
  3. Forming a Coalition: Players can "recruit" neutral pieces by moving one of their pieces next to a "politician" and holding that position for one round. This neutral piece then joins the player's army.
  4. Government Formation Phase: Starting from the third move, each player can attempt to carry out a "government formation" by placing one of their pieces on one of the central squares (d or e squares of the third or sixth row) while the "politician" remains in an adjacent row.
  5. Check and Mate: The game ends by checkmating, as in classic chess, or if a player runs out of their own pieces.
  6. Coalition Break: If two neutral pieces land on the same square, the "coalition" is broken, and both pieces continue the game as neutral pieces.

Strategy

  • Coalition Management: The art of the game lies in successfully recruiting neutral pieces and using them to control the board.
  • Finding Balance: While trying to recruit neutral pieces, ensure your own pieces remain protected.
  • Utilize Central Position: From central positions, you can more effectively influence multiple areas of the board.

Good luck playing Koalitionsschach! Use your strategic skills and tactical acumen to strengthen your "government" and overthrow your opponent's.
