Objective

Wien Catan is based on the popular game "The Settlers of Catan". The goal of the game is to achieve the highest victory points through clever settlement, trade, and construction. Players build settlements, cities, and roads, gathering victory points in the process. The first player to reach a set number of victory points, typically 10, wins the game.

Setup

  • The board is assembled from hexagonal terrain tiles representing the island of Catan. These tiles depict different types of terrain like forests, hills, fields, pastures, and mountains.
  • Each type of terrain produces a specific resource (wood, brick, grain, wool, ore).
  • There is also a desert tile where the robber starts.
  • A number token ranging from 2 to 12 is placed on each tile. These numbers determine which fields produce resources when dice are rolled.
  • Players select their starting positions by placing two settlements and two roads sequentially. The location is crucial for resource yield.

How to Play

The game is played in rounds, with each consisting of the following phases:

  1. Roll Dice: At the beginning of each round, the active player rolls two six-sided dice. The sum indicates which terrain hexes produce resources, and all players collect resources from adjacent hexes that match the rolled number.

  2. Trade: The active player may trade resources with other players. Trades can occur at any time and in any amount.

  3. Build: The player can now build roads, settlements, cities, or buy development cards if they have the necessary resources:

  4. Roads: Cost 1 wood and 1 brick. They connect settlements and cities.
  5. Settlements: Cost 1 wood, 1 brick, 1 grain, and 1 wool. Each settlement grants 1 victory point.
  6. Cities: Cost 2 grain and 3 ore. A city replaces a settlement, increasing victory points by 2.
  7. Development cards: Cost 1 wool, 1 grain, and 1 ore. These cards offer special advantages or extra victory points.

  8. Move the Robber: If a 7 is rolled, no resources are produced. Instead, the robber must move. The active player places the robber on another terrain tile, stealing a resource from one player with an adjacent settlement or city. Affected players cannot collect resources until the robber is moved again.

Special Rules

  • Longest Road: The player with the longest continuous road receives an additional 2 victory points.
  • Largest Army: The player who has played the most knight cards also gains 2 additional victory points.

Strategy Tips

  • Starting Position: Carefully choose to ensure a mix of crucial resource tiles with high probability numbers.
  • Trading: Use trading to balance out resources you lack, but avoid giving others too much advantage.
  • Robber: Strategically use the robber to hinder competitors' production or gain vital resources.

Through securing resources, building connections, and strategic negotiations, you advance your colony on Catan to become the first to attain the target victory points.
