Objective of the game
Brügge is a strategic board game where players aim to collect victory points by constructing buildings, recruiting people, and overcoming events. The game ends after a variable number of rounds, and the player with the most victory points wins.
Game Setup
- The game board is placed in the center of the table. All markers, figures, and coins are placed next to the board.
- Each player chooses a color and takes the corresponding game materials, including workers, houses, and a victory point track.
- The cards are divided into two decks (one deck for building cards and one for person cards). Each player receives an equal number of cards from both decks.
- Place the round tracker and round marker on the game board.
- Determine the starting player randomly who receives the starting player marker.
Game Play
The game is played over several rounds, each consisting of multiple phases:
1. Drawing Cards
At the beginning of their turn, each player draws cards from the two decks until they have a total of 5 cards in their hand.
2. Performing Actions
Players can now take turns performing up to five of the following actions by playing a card:
- Construct a building: Build a building by placing the card in front of you and paying the specified cost in coins.
- Recruit a person: Hire a person by placing a card under a building and paying the cost in coins or workers.
- Receive workers: Use the card to receive workers in the color of the card.
- Earn coins: Sell the card to earn the number of coins printed on it.
- Defend against a threat: Use the card to fend off a threat that would otherwise trigger at the end of the round.
3. Overcoming Events
At the end of each round, an event is revealed and executed that affects all players. These can have positive or negative effects.
4. End of the Round
Move the round marker forward and draw new cards. The game ends when the round marker reaches the end point.
Scoring
At the end of the game, victory points are counted. Points are awarded for:
- Constructed buildings
- Hired people
- Special abilities of people
- Altered threats
Strategic Tips
- Balance your resources: Ensure you always have enough coins and workers to respond flexibly to events.
- Control threats: Do not let threats get out of control as they can have significant downsides.
- Utilize card diversity: Play a variety of card types to benefit from a wide range of effects.
Brügge is a game that requires both strategic planning and flexibility. Enjoy playing!
