Betrayal at House on the Hill
Objective of the game: "Betrayal at House on the Hill" is a cooperative adventure board game with a traitor twist. Players explore a mysterious house, building it room by room and uncovering its secrets. In the first part of the game, players explore the house, preparing for the later "Haunt." In the second phase, one player becomes the traitor, and remaining players must thwart the traitor's plans and fulfill their victory conditions specific to their scenario.
Components:
- Game tiles (Rooms)
- Character cards
- Event cards
- Omen cards
- Item cards
- Miniatures
- Rulebooks and scenario booklets (for both heroes and traitors)
- Various markers and dice
Basic Rules:
- Setup:
- Each player selects a character card with an associated miniature. These cards detail various stats, such as Might and Knowledge, to be used throughout the game.
- Stats start at predetermined levels and can be modified by events and items as the game progresses.
-
The house starts with three visible rooms: the Entrance Hall, the Foyer, and the Grand Staircase.
-
Exploring the House:
- Initially, the aim is to explore the house. Players move their miniatures around, discovering new rooms by drawing room tiles and placing them on the board.
-
When entering a room with a symbol, the player draws the corresponding card – Event, Omen, or Item – and applies its effect or performs the indicated action.
-
The Haunt:
- Each time an Omen is drawn, a Haunt Roll is made, using six dice. Compare the result with the number of Omens revealed.
- If the result is less than the number of Omens, the "Haunt" begins.
-
The traitor is determined based on the room and the drawn Omen card.
-
Traitor vs. Heroes:
- The scenario booklet provides specific goals for both the traitor and the heroes.
- The traitor leaves and secretly reads the goals and abilities for the scenario.
-
Remaining players are the heroes and read their objectives and rules in the survivors' book.
-
Winning the Game:
- The game ends once either the traitor or the heroes achieve their respective goals.
- Often, the heroes must escape or defeat the traitor, while the traitor might aim to capture or defeat the heroes.
Strategic Tips:
- Coordination is key: Players should aim to maximize their strengths and acquire items or Omens that augment their stats.
- Keep track of your stats: As stats play a critical role in combat and events, players should remain aware of them.
- The traitor's advantages are often formidable, but teamwork can overcome them. Heroes should work closely together.
Special Features:
- With a high replay value and unique sessions driven by different combinations of rooms, Omens, and events, the game remains exciting over time.
- The traitor role and its associated goals inject a compelling twist, making each scenario a fresh challenge.
Betrayal at House on the Hill offers a thrilling experience, characterized by unexpected twists and an immersive atmosphere.
