Metropolis - Game Instructions

Objective of the Game

In Metropolis, players take on the role of builders trying to construct the most impressive city. The goal is to accumulate the most victory points by strategically placing buildings and achieving bonus objectives by the end of the game.

Game Components

  • 1 game board with a grid for buildings
  • Various building tiles
  • Victory point markers
  • Objective cards with special tasks
  • Player pieces and markers
  • Play money

Setup

  1. Set up the game board: Place the game board in the center of the table. Position the building tiles in their designated areas.
  2. Deal objective cards: Each player receives two objective cards at the start of the game.
  3. Starting capital: Each player receives a certain amount of play money, depending on the number of players.
  4. Determine the starting player: Choose the starting player randomly.

Gameplay

The game is played in rounds. Each round consists of the following phases:

1. Planning

  • The starting player begins, and each player selects a building tile from the central stack clockwise.

2. Construction Phase

  • During this phase, players take turns placing their chosen building tiles on the game board. Each tile has specific placement rules (e.g., adjacent to residential areas or industrial zones).
  • For each placed building, the player earns certain points, as indicated on the tiles.

3. Financing

  • Players can buy additional actions with play money during this phase, such as swapping tiles or moving already placed buildings.

4. Scoring

  • At the end of each round, potential bonus objectives from the objective cards are scored, and players adjust their victory points accordingly.

Special Features

  • Strategic Placement: Success in Metropolis heavily relies on skillful placement of buildings. Block important areas to hinder opponents and create synergies between your buildings for maximum points.
  • Bonus Objectives: Objective cards introduce additional requirements and can be used to gain an advantage during scoring.
  • Cash for Finesse: The possibility of spending play money adds another layer of strategy. Sometimes, it's more advantageous to spend money wisely to gain a decisive advantage.

End of the Game

The game ends after a certain number of rounds (depending on the number of players) or when there are no more buildings to place. The player with the most victory points wins.

Tips for Beginners

  • Try to identify and exploit synergies between different buildings early on.
  • Always keep an eye on your objective cards to fulfill them optimally and secure bonus points.
  • Use your play money wisely to gain an advantage at critical moments.

Enjoy building your own Metropolis!
