Objective of the Game:
The Funkerspiel ("Radio Operator Game") is a cooperative and communicative card game in which players act as radio operators trying to transmit messages using Morse code. The goal is to decode all messages correctly before time runs out.
Game Materials:
- A deck of cards with Morse code symbols
- A stopwatch or timer
- Notepad and pens for recording
- Optional: A Morse key device or app for practicing Morse code
Game Preparation:
- Setup: Thoroughly shuffle the deck of cards and place it face down in the center of the table.
- Role Distribution: One player is chosen as the "Speaker", who sends out the Morse signals. The other players are the "Receivers".
- Explanation of Morse Code: If not all players are familiar with the Morse alphabet, a short introduction should be given.
- Set Timer: Depending on the difficulty level, different time limits can be set, e.g., 10 minutes for advanced players and 20 minutes for beginners.
Game Play:
- Draw and Transmit: The Speaker draws the top card, looks at it, and memorizes the word or message depicted on it. Then they transmit this word as Morse code (dots and dashes) to the receivers.
- Tip: The Speaker can tap on the table with a pen or verbalize the signals.
- Decode Message: The receivers write down or memorize the Morse signals they receive and attempt to decode the message.
- Communication is allowed among the receivers to collaboratively come to a conclusion.
- Check Agreement: Once the receivers have decoded the message, they compare their result with the drawn card.
- Progress and Time: For each correctly decoded message, the team earns a point. The goal is to score as many points as possible before the time elapses.
End of the Game:
The game ends when the timer runs out or the deck is exhausted. The players win if they have reached or exceeded a predetermined number of points.
Strategic Tips:
- Distribute tasks wisely: Some receivers might focus on specific parts of the message depending on their strengths.
- Practice makes perfect: Players should familiarize themselves with basic Morse code before the game to decode messages faster.
- Keep communication open and clear to avoid misunderstandings.
The Funkerspiel thrives on teamwork and hones skills in the area of non-verbal communication.
