Citadels - Card Game

Strategy, Family Game

group 2 - 8 Deutsch

Objective of the Game

In Citadels, players aim to build the most prosperous city by constructing districts and strategically using character abilities to earn money and influence. The game ends when a player builds their eighth district card, and the player with the most victory points wins the game.

Game Components

  • 80 District Cards: Contain different districts with various building costs and effects.
  • 8 Character Cards: Each character has special abilities that influence gameplay.
  • Gold Coins: Needed to build districts.
  • Crown: Indicates the starting player.

Setup

  1. Each player receives a hand of district cards and two gold coins.
  2. The crown is given to the first player.
  3. Shuffle the character cards and place them face down on the table.
  4. Shuffle the district cards and deal four to each player.

Game Flow

The game consists of rounds, each divided into two phases: the Character Selection Phase and the Action Phase.

  1. Character Selection Phase:
  2. At the start of the round, the player with the crown shuffles the character cards and deals one face down. Depending on the number of players, additional cards are removed to add variability.
  3. Starting with the player who holds the crown, players take turns selecting a character card in secrecy and passing the rest until all characters are distributed.

  4. Action Phase:

  5. Characters are revealed and executed in ascending order (1 to 8). Each character has a unique ability, for example:

    • Assassin: Can target and eliminate another character.
    • Thief: Steals gold from the player who has a specific character.
    • Magician: Can swap district cards with another player.
    • Bishop: Gains protection from the Warlord, who destroys districts.
    • King: Takes the crown and plays first in the next round.
    • Warlord: Can demolish other players' districts.
  6. During a player's turn, they may either take two gold coins or draw one additional district card, choosing to keep one.

  7. Then, they may build a district by paying its cost in gold from their hand.
  8. The game continues until a player has built eight districts, and the current round finishes.

End of the Game

The game ends in the round when a player builds their eighth district. Players then calculate their score: - Victory Points: Determined by summing the cost of all districts in a player's city. - Bonuses for Diversity: Awarded for having all five district types and to the first player to build eight districts.

The player with the most points wins the game. Strategy and careful planning are crucial to secure victory.
