Objective of the Game

Tric Trac, better known as Backgammon, is a strategic board game for two players. The objective is to move all of one's own checkers into their home board and then bear them off before the opponent does.

Game Components

  • A board with 24 spaces, divided into two halves of 12 spaces each.
  • 30 checkers in two colors, 15 per player.
  • Two dice.
  • A doubling cube (optional for advanced players).

Basic Gameplay

  1. Setup: Each player starts with their 15 checkers on the board in the standard starting position:
  2. 2 checkers on point 24,
  3. 5 checkers on point 13,
  4. 3 checkers on point 8,
  5. 5 checkers on point 6.

  6. Direction of Play: Players move their checkers in opposite directions. The first player moves from point 24 to 1, while the second player moves from point 1 to 24.

  7. Turns: Each player rolls two dice and moves their checkers according to the numbers rolled. Each number on the dice represents a space the player may move.

  8. Double Roll: If a player rolls doubles (e.g., two threes), they can move the number shown on the dice four times.

  9. Hitting and Removing Checkers:

  10. A point occupied by one opposing checker can be landed on, the checker is hit and placed in the middle of the board (the bar).
  11. A hit checker must be re-entered from the opponent's home board (point 1) before the player can make any other moves.

  12. Bearing off: Once all of a player's checkers are in their home board, they can begin bearing off their checkers, using the numbers rolled on the dice to move checkers off the board.

Winning Conditions

The player who bears all their checkers off the board first wins. If a player wins before the opponent bears off any checker, it is a double win (Gammon). If the opponent still has checkers in the winner's home board or on the bar, it counts as a triple win (Backgammon).

Strategic Nuances

  • Anchoring Points: Players should aim to cover points with two or more checkers to secure them.
  • Building Blocks: Creating six consecutive occupied spaces blocks the opponent's movement completely.
  • Risk Management: It is advisable to ensure checkers are not easily hit by not leaving them exposed.
