Objective of the Game "The Castles of Burgundy"
In "The Castles of Burgundy", players take on the roles of wealthy princes in the Burgundy region during the Middle Ages. Each player attempts to develop his estate by using workers, goods, and special achievements to be most successful. The goal of the game is to have the most victory points at the end.
Game Components
- Game Board: Each player has an individual estate board.
- Dice: Two six-sided dice for each player and one neutral die.
- Tiles: Various colored hexagonal tiles that allow actions or provide bonuses.
- Goods Tokens: For income and scoring points.
- Coins and Workers: Resources to modify dice results or acquire tiles.
Gameplay
The game is played over several rounds divided into a total of 5 phases.
Round Structure
- Rolling Dice: Each player rolls their two six-sided dice.
- Perform Actions: Each turn, players can perform two actions based on their dice results. Possible actions are:
- Take a Tile: Take a tile from the central depot corresponding to the rolled dice number.
- Place a Tile: Place a previously acquired tile in their estate, provided it fits in an appropriate free area.
- Sell Goods: Sell all goods of one type corresponding to the dice number to gain points.
- Gain Workers or Money: Gain additional workers or coins in order to adjust future rolls.
- Refill Tiles: After all players have performed their two actions, refresh the central depot with new tiles.
Special Rules and Strategic Tips
- Tile Monopoly Strategies: Controlling specific types of tiles to maximize specific bonuses and majorities.
- Worker Strategies: Skillful use of workers can minimize the impact of luck in dice rolling and increase strategic flexibility.
- Timing Planning: Aim to complete large contiguous areas of one color early or at the right time to maximize bonuses.
- Resource Management: Efficient use of coins and collecting matching goods allows for a flexible and high-scoring strategy.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends after all 5 phases have been played. Additional points are awarded for: - Unused silver coins and workers. - Special achievements (% of total different tile set combinations completed). - Quickly completed areas.
The player with the most victory points wins the game.
Tip: Balancing the development of a good infrastructure with collecting points quickly is key to winning the game.
