Objective of the Game
The objective of Hexentanz (Dance of the Witches) is to move your witches safely to the target spot at the center of the game board before your opponents do. The challenge is increased by hidden figures and the necessity for memorization.
Components
- A game board with colorful tiles, resembling a maze.
- Several witch figures per player, color-coded.
- A color die.
Setup
Each player receives a fixed number of witches, starting on a starting tile. The color of each figure is visible only from the bottom and should remain secret. The witches have no distinguishing marks on their top side, which means players can easily lose track of their figures during the game.
Gameplay
A Player's Turn
- Rolling the Die: The player rolls the color die. The rolled symbol indicates the next color-tile the figure can move to.
- Moving: The player selects one of their witches and moves it to the next free color-matching tile.
- Memory Rule: As the figures are indistinguishable on their tops, players must remember which witch belongs to them. Just when it’s their turn, players are allowed to lift a figure to check its color.
Special Rules
- Occupied Tiles: If a witch cannot move to the next color-matching tile because it is occupied, it remains in place.
- Blocking: Occupied tiles can be used strategically to block opponent players.
- Intentional Mix-ups: If a witch is moved to a tile causing the figure to rotate, it's registered in the players’ memory. This option can be used to confuse opponents.
Winning the Game
The first player to bring all their witches safely to the target tiles wins the game. Variations exist, including multiple rounds where the player with the most wins becomes the overall victor.

- Train Your Memory: Pay close attention to remember which witches are yours and their movements.
- Use Blocking: Plan your witches' moves to block opponents as often as possible.
- Take Risks: Sometimes it’s clever not to check witches intentionally, creating confusion among opponents.
