Objective

Kayanak is a game where players take on the role of Inuit fishermen trying to catch as many fish as possible from a frozen lake in the Arctic. The goal of the game is to collect the most and highest-value fish.

Components

  • 1 game board with a large, white playing area representing the frozen lake
  • 4 player tokens that represent the anglers
  • 1 "drilling tool" (metal pin) for drilling holes in the playing board
  • 16 "fishing rods" with magnets at the ends
  • Small cardboard fish with different values
  • 1 die

Setup

  1. Place the game board on the table.
  2. Each player selects a token and places it at a corner of the playing field.
  3. Distribute the cardboard fish under the game board, gently inserting them below the paper.
  4. Each player receives a "fishing rod" magnet.
  5. Determine who will start first by rolling the die.

Gameplay

  1. Roll the Dice: The player rolls and moves their token according to the number rolled on the die. The paths are marked on the board.

  2. Drill Holes: Once a player completes their move, they can drill a hole in the playing surface using the "drilling tool". It is important to only pierce through the paper.

  3. Fish: Insert the "fishing rod" into the drilled hole. Use the magnet to try to catch a fish.

  4. Count Your Catch: Take the caught fish and keep it with you. Each fish has a number indicating its value.

  5. Strategy: Players should note where the highest-value fish are located beneath the paper and plan their drilling accordingly. Observing other players' actions can help identify promising spots.

End of the Game

The game ends when no more fish can be caught, which happens when all the cardboard fish have been lifted off the board or no new holes can be drilled. The winner is the player with the highest score from their accumulated fish.

Tips and Special Features

  • Teamwork: While this is a competitive game, it might be beneficial to form loose strategic alliances to hinder other players' progress.
  • Tactical Placement: Savvy players plan their moves and drilling so as not to miss out on any fish and retain optimal fishing positions.
  • Luck and Planning: While the dice roll introduces an element of chance, planning the drilling of holes is crucial.

Conclusion

Kayanak is an engaging game that requires both luck and strategy. It is especially suited for families and children, encouraging observation and tactical planning. With variable fish positions, it remains exciting and new in every playthrough.
