Lingua - Game Instructions

Objective of the Game:

The objective of Lingua is to score the most points by correctly forming and pronouncing words in the chosen target language. This language-based board game encourages learning and improving language skills in both new and familiar languages.

Game Components:

• A game board with a generous grid of letter tiles.
• A set of letter tiles that each player can draw from.
• A score pad to record the points scored.
• Optional timers to limit the rounds.

Setup:

1. Place the game board in the center of the table.
2. Mix the letter tiles well and place them in a cloth bag.
3. Each player draws 7 letter tiles without showing them to others.
4. Decide on the target language for the game in which the words will be formed.
5. Determine player order by drawing lots or any fair method.

Gameplay:

1. Player Turn:

   • During your turn, you can lay down or overlap a word on the game board that is correct in the chosen target language. The first word must cross the center square.
   • Words can be placed horizontally or vertically.
   • Each letter must be placed on an adjacent square on the grid.

2. Scoring:

   • Points are awarded based on the position and value of the individual letter tiles. Some squares provide double or triple values for letters or entire words when used in laying the word.
   • If players can pronounce the whole word correctly without assistance, they receive bonus points.

3. Tile Exchange:

   • If desired, players can exchange their tiles for new ones from the bag instead of laying a word, but this skips their turn.

4. Round End:

   • The round ends when no player can play any more tiles or when all tiles have been used.
   • The player with the highest score at the end wins.

Strategic Tips:

• Knowledge of the Target Language: The better you are with the word structures and common words in the target language, the easier it is to form longer and more valuable words.
• Placement Tricks: Utilize the special squares on the board to maximize your score.
• Word Planning: Plan ahead which words you could lay out, and develop a strategy to collect the necessary letters.
