Objective of the Game
In Yahtzee, the aim is to score the most points by rolling five dice to get specific number combinations and cleverly filling them out on your scorecard.
Materials
Five six-sided dice, a dice cup, and a score pad.
Gameplay
- Round Start: Each player has up to three attempts per round to roll the best possible combination.
- First Roll: All five dice are rolled.
- Selection and Rerolls: The player then decides which dice to set aside and which to roll again. After each roll, they may keep or reroll any number of dice, as long as they roll no more than three times total.
- Recording the Results: After up to three rolls, the player must enter the result on the scorecard. There are both Upper and Lower sections:
- Upper Section
- Entries 1 – 6: The sum of dice showing that number, e.g., total of all ones rolled.
- Bonus: Scoring 63 or more in the upper section grants an extra 35 points.
- Lower Section
- Three of a Kind: Three identical numbers, total of all dice.
- Four of a Kind: Four identical numbers, total of all dice.
- Full House: Three of one number and two of another, 25 points flat.
- Small Straight: Four sequential numbers, 30 points flat.
- Large Straight: Five sequential numbers, 40 points flat.
- Yahtzee: Five identical numbers, 50 points flat.
- Chance: Any dice combination, total of all dice.
- Upper Section
- End of Round: After entering a result, the next player takes their turn.
End of the Game
The game ends once all players have filled in all 13 of their scorecard entries. Players then sum up their scores. The player with the highest total wins the game.
Strategic Tips
- Upper Section First: Aim initially to fill the upper section to secure the bonus.
- Yahtzee: Multiple Yahtzees count as extra points; aim for them if possible.
- Use of Chance: Use the "Chance" category when other categories cannot be beneficially filled.
