Objective of the Game
The objective of Carcassonne – The Castle is to smartly place tiles and followers to earn the most points. Players score points by completing building projects such as markets, houses, and towers within the castle walls.
Game Components
- 78 tiles with various constructions and paths
- 1 scoring track
- 2 sets of followers in two different colors
- 1 gatekeeper pawn
Setup
- Place the scoring track in the center of the play area.
- Each player chooses a color and takes the respective followers.
- Shuffle the tiles and place them face-down as a draw pile.
- The oldest player starts. Players take turns drawing tiles and placing their followers.
Game Play
The game is played in turns. In each turn, a player draws a tile and places it adjacent to the existing area, expanding or completing sections within the castle walls.
- Draw and Place a Tile: The player draws a tile and places it to fit with the already laid-out area. Paths and walls on the tiles must align.
-
Tip: Intentionally block or disrupt your opponent’s projects.
-
Place a Follower: After placing a tile, the player can place one of their followers on the newly placed tile. Followers can be placed on:
- Markets – score points when completed.
- Houses – bring points as long as they are not occupied by opponents.
- Towers – majorities here can score valuable points.
-
Tip: Place your followers strategically, as each follower returns only after completing a project.
-
If a building project is completed, it is scored and the followers are returned to the supply. A project is complete when it is fully enclosed by walls or paths have no open ends.
End of the Game
The game ends when the last tile is placed from the draw pile. A final scoring follows these rules:
- Incomplete Projects: All projects that are not fully completed are scored, usually for fewer points than complete ones.
- The player with the most points wins the game.
Strategic Tips
- Use Tiles Effectively: Think carefully about where to place difficult-to-complete tiles to hinder your opponent.
- Plan Ahead: Think several moves ahead to ensure that large projects are completed securely.
- Alternate the use of followers: Keep some followers in reserve to react to opportunities quickly.
- Block Tactically: Ensure your opponent has difficulty completing their projects.
Carcassonne – The Castle encourages strategic thinking and forward planning. Enjoy competing within the protective walls!
