The Castles of Burgundy - Game Instructions

Objective of the Game:

"The Castles of Burgundy" is a strategy board game where players take on the roles of aristocrats determined to build the most significant estate in the Burgundy region of the late Middle Ages by cleverly constructing cities, mines, scientific buildings, and other structures. The player with the most victory points at the end of the game wins.

Game Components

  • Game Board: Each player has their own principality board.
  • Tiles: Including cities, pastures, ships, technology, mines, and castles.
  • Goods Tiles: Various trade goods available for sale.
  • Silverlings (Coins): A form of currency in the game.
  • Worker Chips: Used to modify dice results.
  • Dice: Each player needs two dice in their color.

Game Setup

  1. Each player receives a personal game board (principality).
  2. Goods tiles are randomly placed on the marketplace.
  3. Tiles for buildings, ships, mines, etc., are sorted by their backs and set aside.
  4. Each player starts with a few workers and silverlings.
  5. There is a common game board with depots for tiles.

Game Play

The game is played over 5 phases each consisting of 5 rounds. Each phase involves the following steps:

  1. Rolling the Dice: Each player rolls their two dice.
  2. Perform Actions: Players perform actions based on their die rolls. Each action costs one die.

  3. Take a Tile: Take a tile from the central board that matches the number rolled on one of your dice. The depot must have a free spot.

  4. Place a Tile: Build a tile in your principality. The terrain must match and the die result must match the number on the field of your board.
  5. Trade Goods: Sell any number of the same kind of goods tiles. Gain victory points and silverlings.
  6. Take Workers: Gain two worker chips. These allow modifying die results by ±1.

  7. Interim Scoring: After each phase, there is an interim scoring, awarding bonus points for completed sections of terrain.

  8. Final Scoring: After the fifth phase, there is a final scoring:
  9. Remaining silverlings and worker chips give points.
  10. Completely occupied color zones give victory points.

Special Rules

  • Castles: Placing a castle allows an immediate additional action.
  • Ships: Determine player order and give goods tiles.
  • Cities: Each has a unique ability offering players special benefits.

Strategic Considerations

  • Plan your moves in advance to maximize point gains.
  • Take advantage of bonuses from early completion of areas.

Good luck building your principality!
