Objective of the Game

Badugi is an exciting variation of poker where the goal is to form the best Badugi hand. A "Badugi" hand consists of the lowest four cards with different ranks and suits. The aim is to have the lowest "Badugi" hand at the end of the betting rounds.

Materials Needed

  • A standard 52-card deck (without Jokers).
  • Chips or tokens for placing bets.

Number of Players

Badugi can be played by 2 to 8 players.

Game Play

  1. Assign a Dealer: At the start, a player is selected as the dealer. He distributes the cards and oversees the game. The dealer changes after each hand, moving clockwise.

  2. Set Betting Limits: Players should agree on the minimum and maximum bets.

  3. Blinds or Antes: Before dealing the cards, players place either blinds or an ante into the pot to start the game.

  4. Dealing the Cards: Each player receives four cards face down.

  5. First Betting Round: The player left of the big blind starts the first betting round. Players decide to bet (place a bet), raise (increase the current bet), call (match the current bet), or fold (withdraw from the hand).

  6. Drawing Rounds:

  7. After the first round of betting, players may exchange cards from their hand by discarding any number and drawing new cards.
  8. Another round of betting follows.
  9. This process is repeated three times in total.

  10. Final Betting Round: After the last draw and the final round of betting, the game proceeds to the Showdown.

  11. Remaining players reveal their cards.
  12. The best Badugi hand wins the pot.

Determining the Winning Hand

  • A "Badugi" hand consists of four cards, each of a different suit and rank.
  • Cards are ranked from lowest to highest, with Aces counted as low.
  • An incomplete Badugi hand (e.g., only three cards of different suits) is less valuable than a complete four-card Badugi hand.

Strategic Tips

  • Aim to collect the four lowest cards of different suits and ranks early on.
  • Try to minimize the number of draws to keep opponents uncertain about your hand strength.
  • Observe other players' behaviors to gauge the strength of their hands.

Badugi is an intriguing blend of strategy and luck, which can present challenges even to seasoned poker players.
