Objective of the Game
The objective of Ogallala is to build and complete decks of river boats along the Missouri River by collecting cards. The player with the most points from completed boats and bonus points at the end of the game wins.
Game Components
- Ogallala card deck with various boat cards (bow, stern, middle part) and Indian attack cards
- Scorepad
Game Setup
- Shuffle the deck thoroughly and deal five cards to each player.
- Place the remaining deck as the draw pile in the center of the table.
- Each player receives a score sheet to record their points.
Game Play
The game is played in turns in a clockwise direction. During your turn, you follow these actions:
- Draw a card: Draw one card from the draw pile into your hand.
- Play a card: Play a card from your hand and place it in front of you.
- Boat Building:
- To construct a boat, you must play different parts (bow, middle section, stern).
- A boat can have any number of middle sections but must start with a bow and end with a stern.
- Attack Cards:
- If you play an Indian attack card, you can destroy a finished boat of another player.
- The affected player places the destroyed boat onto the discard pile.
- Complete Boats: Once you complete a boat, set it aside and record the points.
- A complete boat consists of at least one bow, any number of middle sections, and one stern.
- Each card part has a point value that is summed up.
Special Features & Strategies
- Defensive Tactics: Hold on to your Indian attack cards to deploy them strategically when an opponent is about to finish a high-value construction.
- Optimizing Moves: Plan your moves ahead and try to manage your hand to quickly build complete boats.
- Risk Assessment: Consider when to use many middle sections. The longer the construction, the more points, but it also increases the risk of an enemy attack.
End of the Game and Winner
The game ends when no cards are left in the draw pile and a player cannot draw a card anymore. Players count points from their assembled boats. The player with the most points wins.
