Objective

The Settlers of Catan – Struggle for Rome is a strategy board game where players take the role of different tribes aiming to settle in Rome and establish the best settlement area. To win, players must collect victory points by building settlements and cities, constructing roads, and demonstrating trade and military power.

Setup

  1. Prepare the board: Assemble the modular hex tile board, representing various resources such as wheat, wood, ore, wool, and clay.
  2. Resources and Cards: Separate the resource and development cards into different piles.
  3. Starting Position: Each player chooses a color and takes the corresponding roads, settlements, and cities. Begin with placing two roads and two settlements on the board.
  4. Place the Robber: The robber piece starts on the desert tile.
  5. Resource Distribution: Deal starting resources based on the starting settlement positions.

Gameplay

The game is played in rounds where each player goes through the following phases:

1. Rolling Dice:

The current player rolls two dice. The sum determines which hex tiles produce resources. Players with a settlement on one of the rolled numbers receive that resource.

2. Trade and Build

Trade: * Players can trade resources with each other or with the bank (4:1 trade, or port trade for better rates).

Build: * Roads: Cost 1 wood and 1 clay to build. * Settlements: Require 1 wood, 1 clay, 1 wheat, and 1 wool. * Cities: Upgrade settlements and require 2 wheat and 3 ore. * Development Cards: Cost 1 ore, 1 wool, 1 wheat, and offer advantages or victory points.

3. Move the Robber

If a "7" is rolled, the player can move the robber. * All players holding more than 7 resource cards must discard half. * The robber is placed on a hex tile, blocking resource production there.

Winning the Game

The game ends when a player reaches 10 victory points. Points are gained through: * Settlements (1 point each) * Cities (2 points each) * Longest Road (2 points – for the player with the longest continuous road network) * Largest Army (2 points – for the player with the most knight cards played) * Development Cards like universities, libraries, etc.

Strategies and Tips

  • Resource Diversity: Ensure you control a varied mix of terrain to access all essential resources.
  • Trading: Be active in trading to acquire lacking resources.
  • Flexibility: Plan ahead and be ready to adapt your strategy if other players block your plans.
  • Robber Tactic: Use the robber strategically to hinder competitors’ resource production or secure your own.
