Objective
Pig is a dice game with the goal of being the first player to reach a predetermined score, usually 100 points.
Equipment
- Dice: You need one six-sided die.
- Paper and Pencil: For keeping track of scores.
Game Play
-
Starting: The youngest player begins, and play proceeds clockwise.
-
Rolling: On your turn, roll the die as many times as you want and add the values together.
-
Each roll (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) adds to the turn total.
-
"Pig" rule: Rolling a 1 immediately ends your turn and you lose all points earned for that turn. The total score remains unchanged.
-
Holding Points: You can choose to end your turn at any time before rolling a 1 to "hold", adding your turn total to your overall score.
-
Winning the Game: The first player to reach the predetermined target score, often 100, wins the game.
Strategic Considerations
- Risk vs. Safety: Decide how many times to roll the dice. The more you roll, the more points you can accumulate, but rolling a 1 means losing all points from that round.
- When to hold: A smart player knows when to quit rolling to avoid a 1, especially when catching up to an opponent nearing a win.
Special Rules
- Variants: The game can be varied by adjusting the target score or adding rules, such as losing points for rolling two consecutive 1s over two rounds.
