Objective of the Game:

Kabufuda is a traditional Japanese card game similar to the western game Blackjack, focusing on card values. The objective is to get as close to the number 9 as possible without exceeding it.

Game Components:

Kabufuda uses a special deck of cards called "Kabufuda cards," comprised of 40 wooden or paper cards with the numbers 1 through 10. Each number appears four times in the deck.

Starting the Game:

  1. Select a Dealer. This can be done randomly or by mutual agreement.
  2. All cards are shuffled well.

Game Play:

  1. Each player is dealt two cards, which they keep face down in front of them.
  2. The dealer also deals themselves two cards.
  3. The player to the left of the dealer starts with the following options:
  4. Draw a card: The player can draw a card from the deck to improve their hand value.
  5. Stand: The player decides to stick to their current hand value.
  6. The aim is to get close to the card value of 9. If a player exceeds 9, they "bust" and are eliminated from the round.
  7. All numbered cards count as they are, with Ace cards valued at 1.
  8. The dealer plays last, typically having to draw until reaching at least a hand value of 5.

Winning Conditions:

  • Once all players and the dealer have stood, the cards are revealed.
  • The player with the hand value closest to 9 without going over wins.
  • In the case of a tie, the player with the highest single card wins.
  • If no players win (e.g., if all bust), the house wins, if wagering is involved.

Strategic Tips:

  • Assess Your Risk: Weigh the benefits of drawing another card against the risk of busting.
  • Watch Opponents: Try to gauge opponents' hands based on their actions when drawing or standing.

Enjoy playing Kabufuda!
