Fortress Chess - Board Game

Objective of the Game

Russian Fortress Chess is a variant of classic chess where the goal is to protect your king and conquer the opponent's fortress. The main objective is to checkmate the opponent's king, but there are special rules that need to be considered.

Game Start

  1. Board Setup: The board consists of 64 squares, similar to classic chess, where the pieces are set up identically.

  2. Pieces: Each side has the same pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, and 8 pawns.

Rules

  1. Moves: The moves of individual pieces are the same as in classic chess:
  2. The pawn moves one square forward, captures diagonally.
  3. The knight moves in an L-shape.
  4. The bishop moves diagonally over any number of squares.
  5. The rook moves horizontally or vertically over any number of squares.
  6. The queen moves horizontally, vertically, or diagonally over any number of squares.
  7. The king moves one square in any direction.

  8. Fortresses: In this variant, there are so-called fortresses formed by increased mobility or defense of a particular piece.

  9. Pawn Promotion: When a pawn reaches the opponent's back rank, it can be promoted to a queen, rook, bishop, or knight.

  10. Castling: Castling is a move where both the king and the rook move. The king moves two squares towards the rook, and the rook jumps over the king. This can only happen under certain conditions - neither the king nor the rook may have moved prior, the squares between them must be unoccupied, and the king must not be in check or pass over a threatened square.

  11. En passant capture: A pawn can capture an opponent's pawn en passant if it advances two squares from its original position and lands beside one of your pawns. The capture must be made immediately in the next move.

Strategy

  • Since the fortresses play a particular role, it's crucial to build a strategic defense early on and keep the enemy's fortress under observation.
  • Pawn Moves: Due to the promotion possibility, it is often advantageous to force pawn moves to bring additional powerful pieces into play.
  • Castling: Castling is often a critical move to secure the king and connect the rooks. The decision to perform a short or long castling can significantly impact the game.
  • Middlegame: Control the center of the board early on to maximize your striking power and increase pressure on the opponent's fortress.

Note: Russian Fortress Chess aims to maintain the strategic depth of classic chess while introducing nuanced play around fortresses, encouraging additional tactical considerations.
